Classes

The best way to see whether you would enjoy practicing karate and having the possibility to ask any questions is to come by and participate in a lesson! Your first lesson is free of charge.

You are more than welcome to come by any class scheduled in Sporthal De Pijp and Shorin Ryu Karate Headquarters in Amsterdam.

The registration fee is € 30.- and the monthly contribution is € 60.-

The basic format of our class is:

  • Formal bow-in

  • Warming up

  • Basic techniques and foundation movements

  • Kata

  • Working with a partner

  • Focus of the lesson (self-defense, applications, kumite, etc)

  • Formal bow-out

Important notes:

  • Beginners are welcome in all classes except at “Advanced” and “Invitation only” lessons.

  • If you do not have a karate gi for the first class, comfortable clothing (jogging suit) and a towel is required.

What do I need to know for my first karate class?

Potential students please contact the Dojo before arriving for your free trial lesson, this to ensure that you can be accommodated in that particular class.  In addition you also need to:

  • Arrive at least 10 minutes before the scheduled class starts.

  • Wear loose clothing, such as a training suit and a t-shirt if you do not have a karate gi yet.

  • Have an open mind and be genuinely interested in learning traditional Karate.

  • You have thoroughly read our website, especially the sections About Us  and Classes, as well as Expectations of the Student .

  • Come prepared with any questions for the instructor.

  • If you have any health concerns, please discuss them with a doctor and let the instructor know before the class.

  • Remember that there will be some language and cultural differences, but not to be worried. Everyone has to learn at some time.

  • For new adults, remember that Karate is a martial art and a form of self-defense. It is not an alternative of the gym for a workout (even though we do physical workout in Karate), but we do not practice Karate for sport.

Spectations of students

Even though we encourage everyone to join, start and/or enquire about martial arts, we only accept those students who will be serious and dedicated to their training, due to that we are not a commercial Dojo. Adults are required to commit for training, at least twice a week.

We do no practice Karate as a sport.  We have a different approach within the discipline and a certain attitude is needed in order to gain the most out of the training that we offer.

What you will learn with us:

  • Improve coordination and reflexes.

  • Discipline.

  • Confidence.

  • Fitness, endurance, health and flexibility.

  • Evolution and life style development.

  • Culture and history.

  • Stress management.

  • Protecting yourself and others.
